Who says snacks have to be the one-way ticket to gaining weight? These savory twisters with capers and fresh rosemary are abundant in healthy ingredients – yet, they lack no flavor.
The recipe is originally vegan. I’ve added nutritional yeast flakes to achieve the cheesy flavor. However, Parmesan cheese can replace the yeast for a non-vegan version, just make sure not to go overboard with it.
As for the main flavor carrier – the capers – you can sub them with olives if you are not a caper fan. Personally I love them and the specific aroma they give to this tasty snack, as they go hand in hand with walnuts and rosemary.
Speaking of rosemary – if you’re unable to put a branch of fresh rosemary, sub it with dried. I must emphasize that in this combination, the fresh one makes a massive difference.
These twisters are not greasy or super-soft. They can be if you tone up the oil (which I do not recommend) and substitute the whole grain wheat flour with the refined one. Again, not recommended. The reason is simple: we want to keep them bursting with nutritious values, just as they are bursting with flavors. Besides, their texture makes them absolutely perfect to dip into a creamy sauce!
So, let’s talk about the perfect dip for this amazing snack or appetizer if you will. The abundance of aromas these twisters with rosemary and capers have to offer obliges you to serve them with a complimentary taste. In my opinion, the perfect companion is the creamy baked onion and fresh oregano dip.
Once you bake the twisters, keep them in an air-tight container for up to 7 days. I guess this is their optimal storage time. In our house, they disappeared the same night and we didn’t even have guests!

minutesA flavourful no-guilt snack – or even dinner! – that can be made with Parmesan cheese for a non-vegan option. Serve it with a rich red wine and of course, a creamy dip to complete the hedonism.
Ingredients
200 gr spelt flour
100 gr whole grain wheat flour
5 gr of dry yeast
Handful of fresh rosemary
Handful of capers
50 gr walnuts
2 tbsp nutritional yeast flakes
2 tbsp olive oil
Water
Directions
- Measure and mix the flours in a big bowl. Add the fresh rosemary leaves and capers.
- In a separate bowl, mix the yeast with few spoons of water until the yeast completely dissolves. Pour the dissolved yeast into flours with capers and stir thoroughly. Add the water to get a sticky dough consistency.
- Chop the walnuts into chunks and carefully add to the dough.
- Pour the olive oil, stir all again and leave the dough to rest, until it doubles in size – around an hour.
- Preheat the oven.
- Prepare the surface for the twists by dusting with flour. Place the dough, knead with your hands around 10 times, adding flour to prevent it from sticking.
- Cut the dough into smaller pieces, twist them carefully and place into the baking tray. Once ready to bake, drizzle the twists with a bit of olive oil.
- Bake for around 20 minutes, or until the twists become golden. Enjoy!
